cloth
cloth literally begins with a cloth, huge, thin, thick, soft, rough and smooth. In other words, from a workable surface which may cover us, silence our contours, yet may also allow us to reshape our traits, gain new texture or else self-withdraw within… and by that perform a different (fictional) choreography. The project advocates choreography as the covering, rather than the disclosing of form/meaning, thus as a way to “uncover” by concealment – in both a literal and a metaphoric sense. To re-cover and cover anew is therefore the strategy of becoming that the project systematically employs by a series of retakes where sight and language are questioned and reprocessed, in tangible as well as virtual terms.
cloth refers to the concept fold as formulated by philosopher Gilles Deleuze, thorough his reading of Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz and the Baroque aesthetics’ chiaroscuro. Fold stands here for the draping of a surface that folds onto itself, where the ‘outer layer’ of the surface exposes (simulates) a virtual ‘internal depth’. In other words, not by the ‘uncovering’ of itself, but rather by the folding of its outer surface onto itself, whilst dwelling itself into the narrow turns of each fold and surrendering to the ‘unfolding’ brightness of each fold’s shadow’s outer edge of chiaroscuro.

exhibition
cloth is an installation and exhibition that reevaluates the format, place and circumstance for the becoming and exposure of choreography as well as photography.
cloth is conceived by Cristina Caprioli in collaboration with photographer Håkan Larsson, and was presented by ccap in 2015 at Design Hall in Stockholm. The exhibition is site specific, and unfolds in relation to the room(s) it inhabits. It was produced 2014 in a different format with support from Scenkonst Sörmland and Katrineholms Konsthall. Fall 2017 it was presented with the title Under Cover at Millesgården, with Masha Taavoniku as producer.
The conceptual frame is a series of photographs taken during the live performance, with the squatting crawling female figure as central theme. The exhibition also includes film, slide shows, objects, a publication and on occasions the live performance.

live installation
cloth is an under cover choreography and an interactive installation. Two performers are dancing under a huge cloth. The cloth hides their features, and resists every move, whilst draping itself into an ocean of ripples which uncover new narratives, at once terrifying and beautiful.
Audiences are welcomed to dance under the cover, with the guidance of the performers. And by that to perform an experience they themselves cannot see. For the benefit of those who remain outside.
The installation refers to the Baroque aesthetics of chiaroscuro via Maurizio Cattelan’s installation All (2007). It is performed in museums, art galleries and other public spaces – as a durational event (lasting up to 3 hours per day).
cloth live installation premiered at Moderna Museet in Stockholm April 2011 as part of the festival:display. Since then it has been repeatedly performed in Stockholm, Katrineholm, Umeå and Copenhagen.
